Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Did Lady Gaga really call you a "master designer?"
A. Yes, but it was late and the room was dark.
Q. What was your favorite book as a child?
A. One of my earliest memories is my dad reading JURASSIC PARK by Michael Crichton to me. He even did different voices for each of the characters. Rampaging dinosaurs might not have been the best introduction to literature for a small child, but it's still one of my favorites.
Q. What is your favorite color?
A. Blue. Especially when it leans toward teal.
Q. Favorite pizza?
A. The Hellboy at Paulie Gee's. This has become pretty controversial in my neighborhood.
Q. Where did you find inspiration for the Vivian book?
A. Vivian has a huge personality and I thought she should have a physical stature that matched. The first image was definitely inspired by Godzilla. I think I was even calling her "Vivzilla" at one point. After a few pictures, I shrunk her down to a "manageable" 6 feet tall and a story started evolving. The rest is history.
Q. What program do you use to make the Vivian pictures?
A. I use Capture One for raw image processing. The rest is in Adobe Photoshop.
Q. How did you learn Photoshop?
A. I'm always working to grow my skills and I work hard to consistently improve. It's a combination of experimenting in Photoshop, taking online classes and finding great mentors. CreativeLive is a fantastic resource. I worked as a VFX artist at a post production house in NYC for a few years and dramatically improved my compositing skills by watching the comp artists and asking them questions.
Q. How many picture books have you made?
VIVIAN THE DOG MOVES TO THE BIG CITY is my debut. I fell in love with the picture book medium while making it and now I have a few more books in progress! In addition to the second Vivian book, I'm working on two other stories: one about a space dentist and another about a kid with a roller coaster in his backyard. I'm finishing up the manuscripts and getting ready to start shopping them around.
Q. Are are you accepting new client work?
Yep! I split my time pretty evenly between picture books and editorial/agency client work. My favorite projects are photo-illustrations with a science fiction-y vibe (see my favorite book answer). Feel free to hit me up! Let's make something amazing together.
